Which Bedroom Blinds Block the Sun Best?
The bedroom needs the best sun blocking in the house, especially when it faces east and catches the early sun, or when someone in the family works night shifts or young children nap during the day. To get it truly dark, pay attention to both the type of fabric and the way it is installed.
3 good sun-blocking options for bedrooms
1. Two-layer curtains with a blackout main fabric
The inner sheer layer gives soft light during the day, and the blackout main layer blocks light when fully closed. Thick fabric also makes the room quieter. Ideal for master bedrooms and cosy rooms. View fabric curtains.
2. Blackout roller blinds
Compact, great value and covers the whole window. Ideal for small bedrooms, children's rooms and apartments. View roller blinds.
3. Blackout honeycomb blinds
Besides blocking light, the air-pocket layer helps reduce heat – ideal for west-facing bedrooms or attic rooms. View honeycomb blinds.
Why does light still get in with blackout curtains?
- Mounted inside the window frame: light leaks through the gaps on each side. For more darkness, mount outside the frame, wider than the opening on each side.
- Rod fixed right at the top edge of the window: light leaks in from above. Mount it higher than the window edge or use a pelmet over the track.
- Thin, light-coloured fabric: real blackout fabric usually has a coating or a dense weave; check real samples in sunlight before choosing.
Should you choose zebra blinds for a bedroom?
Yes, if you need flexible light control rather than total darkness. Zebra blinds block most sunlight but some may leak at the edges of the bands. See our zebra blinds project for a townhouse bedroom.
