Roller Blinds or Zebra Blinds: Which Should You Choose?

VTP DECOR zebra blinds fitted to a living room window

This is the question customers ask VTP DECOR most often. From a distance the two look quite similar because both roll up neatly onto a tube at the top, but the way they control light is completely different. Choosing the right one makes daily use more comfortable without costing more.

How they are built

Roller blinds have a single layer of fabric. Pull down to cover, roll up to open. To let light in, you have to roll the blind up part of the way.

Zebra blinds have alternating solid and sheer bands running in a two-layer loop. Shift the layers so the solid bands cover the sheer ones and the room darkens; align the sheer bands and light passes through while the blind still covers the whole window.

Quick comparison

  • Total blackout: blackout roller blinds do better. Zebra blinds block most light but some may leak at the edges of the bands.
  • Daylight with privacy: zebra blinds do better, letting light in without rolling the blind up.
  • Cost: roller blinds are usually cheaper than zebra blinds of the same size.
  • Cleaning: both are easy to dust; single-layer roller blinds are quicker to wipe.

Which room suits which?

  • Bedrooms used for naps or daytime sleep: blackout roller blinds.
  • Living rooms and home offices: zebra blinds, adjusting the light through the day.
  • Offices, banks and transaction counters: grey zebra blinds for large glass areas; roller blinds for meeting rooms that use projectors.
  • Rental rooms and apartments: roller blinds to keep costs down.
"If you need it completely dark, choose blackout roller blinds. If you adjust the light several times a day, choose zebra blinds."

One home can easily use both: roller blinds for the bedroom, zebra blinds for the living room. See our real projects: zebra blinds at VietinBank Ham Nghi and roller blinds for an office canteen.
