Mouldy Curtains: Causes and How to Fix Them at Home

In the rainy season in Binh Duong and Ho Chi Minh City, many customers message VTP DECOR because their curtains have black spots, yellow stains or a damp smell. In most cases this is caused by a humid environment, not by faulty fabric or installation, and it can be treated at home if caught early.

Why do curtains go mouldy?

• Poorly ventilated rooms kept closed for long periods, especially bathrooms and bedrooms where the air-conditioning is switched on and off frequently.
• Condensation on the glass running down to the bottom of the curtain.
• Curtains close to damp walls, leaking walls, or near sinks and cooking areas.
• Dust that builds up over time holds moisture and lets mould grow.

How to treat each type of curtain

Fabric curtains

• Take the curtains down, shake them out and vacuum first.
• Soak and gently wash in warm water with a mild detergent. Don't use chlorine bleach on coloured fabric as it fades easily.
• Dry in a well-ventilated place until completely dry before rehanging. Hanging them while damp will bring the mould back.

Roller blinds and zebra blinds

• It's usually best not to remove the fabric for machine washing. Lower the blind fully, wipe the mould with a soft cloth dampened in diluted soapy water, then wipe again with a clean cloth.
• Leave the blind down until completely dry before rolling it up.

Wood, aluminium and PVC blinds

• Wipe each slat with a damp cloth and a little dishwashing liquid, then dry. Wood blinds should not be left wet for long.

Preventing mould long-term

• Open windows for ventilation every day and run the exhaust fan in bathrooms.
• Don't let the bottom of the curtain touch a wet floor or a window sill with standing water.
• In very humid areas such as bathrooms and kitchens, choose materials that absorb little water: faux-wood EPS blinds, aluminium venetian blinds, or bamboo blinds as in our complete townhouse project.
